I have pushed HP5+ to 1600 in DD-X with good results. gaius|1, Oct 25, 2005 #1 old school Recently pushed HP5+ to 3200 in Microphen with very pleasing results. Holds enough detail in the shadows, the midtones are very good, has a tendancy for the extremes to be blown/block up but thats what you'd expect with the increased contrast.

I've pushed it to 1600 in 35mm and 3200 in 120. I used Ilfotec DD-X to develop it and it produced excellent results with little noticeable grain 

Ilford HP5 Plus is rated to shoot between ISO 200 and 3200, but it will show the best results between ISO 320 and 1600. This film shows remarkable results even at higher ISO values, but the further HP5 is pushed, the more grain and contrast it'll show. When overexposed, HP5 negatives will have greater density, finer grain, and less contrast.

My go-to developer is Kodak HC-110 and it's also the developer I use for pushing HP5+. I usually go for dilution A and cook the film for Ilford recommended 5 and a half minutes. This will bring the ISO to 1600. When contrast is of utmost importance and light is lacking, cooking for 9 and a half minutes will give you ISO 3200.

3200 will give you more grain with more range in the overall tone whereas pushing HP5 (I have only pushed it to 1600) will have less grain but less detail in the shadows and highlights. Essentially you are underexposing by 4-5 stops (little detail in shadows) and then greater overdeveloping (might lose detail in the highlights).

And while the grain was definitely more pronounced than HP5+ shot at box speed, it was nowhere near the amount of grain in the Delta 3200 shots. This also means that the HP5+ shots are much sharper than the Delta 3200. So if you like lots of grain, Delta 3200 is still your best bet! Click to enlarge Final Thoughts
