My 5 in bbl GP100 that is about 4 years old is almost as smooth as glass whether pointed up or down with cylinder swung open, while my 1 year old 3 in bbl model has significant roughness while the barrel is pointed upward.

The GP100 and Smith 686 (L frame) are direct competitors. The Smith comes from the factory with a decent trigger, the GP100 (and SP101) require about 30 minutes of polishing and clipping 1-2 coils of hammer spring to bring the pull down.
