Since joining the electrical and computer engineering department at Virginia Tech in , I have been working on nano- and micro-devices for human and machine interfaces, taking advantage of both my Ph.D. and postdoc experiences. My career path has been deeply influenced by my Ph.D. advisor Millie Dresselhaus.

We seek inspirations from nature, e.g. transparent armor from transparent seashells, lightweight structural materials from natural cellular materials, multifunctional structural materials from mollusk shells with visual capabilities, etc., for the development of engineering structural material solutions. In the ocean, the cuttlefish uses cuttlebone as a hard buoyancy tank to control its movement up and down the water column, to depths as low as 600 meters.
